平凡的大学生夜神月（洼田正孝饰）跟在警视厅搜查一课上班的父亲夜神总一郎以及妹妹妆裕共同生活。某天，他捡到死神丢落在人间的笔记本，名字被写在这个本子上的人就会真的死去。开始，夜神月只是当成玩笑，把威胁好友鸭田的佐古田的名字写了上去，但是佐古田真的死掉了。佐古田的死让很多人感到高兴，而月也产生了一种奇妙的感觉。之后，月使用笔记的力量不断杀死罪犯，引起了国际刑警组织的注意，国际刑警组织邀请神秘的名侦探L（山崎贤人饰）来到日本，同夜神总一郎等人共同展开调查。从此，夜神月与L展开了生死对决。
这部动画由诸多微小而有趣的故事组成，是一部很适合中国孩子观看的动画片。大头儿子、是个活泼可爱的大头的小孩，小头爸爸、是个给予大头儿子的是想象力的满足和对他一颗童心，围裙妈妈是一个三口之家，他们是中国现代家庭教育典型的缩影。

《非凡的公主希瑞》是当年引进的美国怀旧动画片的旗舰作品，但此片在美国的影响力不如其前作《宇宙的巨人希曼》，不过在当年中国大陆可是刮起一阵女超人的旋风。此片中正邪双方人物的成功塑造可说是本片的最大看点。再加上北京电视台完美的译制，多少年过去了，仍然让人回味无穷。郑建初老师配的希瑞，声音刚劲又不失柔美，让人赞不绝口。
