一个人静静地死在自己的卧室里。这人是一家大公司的总经理，外环路工程主管。从现场情况看，他的死因是由于本人不慎而导致的煤气中毒。公安局刑警队长郑牧经过对现场的仔细勘察，确定常玉林是死于谋杀。重案组的调查涉及到了三位家大业大、位高权重的人物，但这三人都有案发期间不在现场、没有作案时间的证明。调查中，一个叫仇众山的引起了郑牧的注意。他发现仇众山对幕前幕后的一切都了如指掌。郑牧希望仇众山能帮助自己。而仇众山却巧妙地躲开了郑牧。紧跟着，一桩桩一件件贪污挪用公款的事实摆在郑牧面前，郑牧急切地想找到帮助自己破案的这个人，而这个人却一次次躲开了郑牧的视线。终于，郑牧了解到，那三位大人物在一起插过队，那个年月发生的事情一直延续到了今天……原来，这三个“铁哥们儿”在插队的时候，欠下了一位女知青一笑还不清的债，而这位女知青在满怀耻辱悲愤自杀未遂，被一位善良的老农救下之后，生下了一个男孩子。孩子终于长大了，他发誓为母亲报仇……

The end of each episode features a white van swerving to avoid a pedestrian and crashing into a garden wall. Some residents escape unharmed, while others are not so lucky. A red plastic bag is seen being blown by the wind through the town in every episode, indicating that all the stories occur simultaneously. This is the only series that does not include a laughter track.
