故事以少林至宝《洗髓经》贯穿始终。因为据说练习此经，能使人返老还童，长生不老。成为当时达官贵人们觊觎的对象。所以身为连坤妻子的咏梅，又略懂梵文，在偷回《洗髓经》后充当翻译之时就被连坤不断虐待。咏梅不堪忍受就带着经书逃走，练了一章之后竟然从四十多岁重变回二十岁，使她大吃一惊，便把《洗髓经》藏起不再练。遂改名楚梦色。机缘巧合之下，梦色遇到了白世芬，世芬对其一见钟情。梦色却也在与世芬相处的过程中渐生情愫。然而此时好姐妹端木娇的介入却使得梦色倍感尴尬。同时，也苦于自己不能改变的年龄和身份，只能将心中的感情深埋。另一方面，连坤苦苦追寻梦色多年，后竟不惜杀她夺回经书。在逃难的过程中，梦色和世芬的感情也日益增长，但有阿娇的存在，两人都只能将心中的感情苦苦压抑。在一片刀光剑影的悲壮中，最终连坤被世芬所杀。然而梦色却容颜尽毁，与世芬终究有缘无份……
