故事讲述革命青年容亨抵达北京后，于当时动荡的时局里，所发生的一段段曲折感人故事。容亨（潘志文）抵北京后，巧遇其姐容达（鲍起静）与姐夫梁节操（王伟），而亨此行乃代表南方政府为谈判事而来，为了解北京实况，往访任教于北京大学的顾学儒（刘纬民），得学儒之邀加入国事研究社，并得学生周启华（刘松仁）为私人助理。亨应邀到北京大学演讲，邂逅上海大亨之女施婷婷（米雪），婷婷初与启华相好，但遇上亨后，便对启华冷淡，启华无奈，唯决意退出情场，寄情于学运与革命事业。南北政府谈判破裂，亨被勒令离境，却暗中潜回，于幕后策动五四运动，深得启华及大部分学生支持，亨行踪被节操发现，遂设计捕亨。亨被判死刑，幸得婷婷及其父之助，得免死，改判终身监禁；而达与节操亦为此事夫妻反目。众人为了营救亨，牵引也一串串故事。
这部剧讲述了李氏王朝宦官金处善的一生及发生在那个时代的宫廷故事。
萧蔷饰演的女主人公叫方滟琳，是个患有先天性心脏病的女孩，她很喜欢林瑞阳饰演的男主人公，但是男主人公一开始爱的是女主人公的姐姐，女主人公方滟琳她从一开始就知道自己患有心脏病是活不久的，所以她对自己喜欢的人就会用很极端的方法追求……这个角色是个很不完美的人，她有她的脆弱、任性，她冲动而不理智，甚至为爱想要整垮很爱她的姐姐……而且最后更极端的是：方滟琳最后竟然开车撞下山崖，导致下半身残废……但是在奄奄一息的时候，她却终于幡然醒悟，她坚持去了法庭为姐姐作证，临终前她对男主人公留下一句爱的誓言：我要生生世世都追寻着你！但最后还是因心脏病突发而死去。然而在她这一系列极端的行为之后，男主人公心里其实也早已渐渐地爱上了她，只是不知道该怎么面对她疯狂的行为和彼此伤痕累累的心，所以最后男主人公在女主人公方滟琳去世后也没有跟她的姐姐在一起。
