本剧基于记者Justin Fenton的同名书籍创作，《火线》制片人David Simon和George Pelecanos共同打造。
该剧被称作「现代童话」，故事描述游手好闲但长相迷人的Dud在父亲死后加入一个长滩兄弟会，以寻求简单幸福的生活方式。在兄弟会的宿舍里，他和其他成员逐渐建立了感情，并且找到了失去的人生目标和意义。他将直面自己内心最深的恐惧和最大的希望。其他关键角色包括Dud的双胞胎妹妹Liz Dudley和兄弟会宿舍里的长期住户Ernie Fontaine。Ernie是个黑人，他用自己的方式欢迎Dud来到这个神秘的新世界。
